There are times when mothers and babies must spend time apart. Should it be when mum returns to work, has a family event, an appointment or just needs a bit of “me time”. Breastfeeding mothers often find it difficult to find the opportunity to express milk while they are away from their baby or out of the comfort of the home. Standard breast pumps can be bulky, noisy and indiscrete, which isn’t ideal in the office or in a public place.

The Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump with Suction Base is perfect for travelling or use anywhere that you would like to express discretely. The lightweight pump is made from 100% food grade silicone and is not only eco-friendly but easy to use. The pump is ideal for use while you are feeding your baby on one breast to catch the otherwise wasted let down milk from the other breast. The pump simply attaches to one breast while you are feeding your baby from the other. It is attached using suction which gently pulls the nipple catching the milk let down.

You can also use it as a manually pump by simply squeezing the bottle in and out at the bottom to express. The pump is light weight and silent allowing you to express discretely when you need to.  It is also free from BPA, PVC and Phthalate.

These is also a lid available to prevent spillage. It is advisable to transfer the milk to a breastmilk storage bag or container for transport as there is a chance of movement of the lid while in a handbag or nappy bag.

The Haakaa Breast Pump is perfect for use while travelling long distances or overnight stays as it fits into your bag. The pump is dishwasher friendly on the top shelve of the machine.

How to use your breast pump:

  • Sterilise your pump (caps are available online to purchase – caps keep the pump sterile after cleaning)
  • Place top of pump over your nipple – make sure your nipple is in the neck of the pump and comfortable.
  • Apply suction – you may need to adjust a couple of times. Once the pump is secure and comfortable you can squeeze the base of the pump (not interfering with the top/suction) to create some movement.
  • A warm flannel on top of your breast is also a great tip and gently massage the top of your breast.
  • Once milk begins to flow simply leave the pump alone to do its thing.
  • Once the pump becomes full empty into a glass storage bottle and reposition.

The pump and lid are both available to buy from www.inishpharmacy.com for delivery to your door. Why not shop our full range of mother and baby products at amazingly low prices!

Dylon Fabric Dye

Posted: Thu, 25 August 2016, 11:23

Add Some Colour to Your Life with Dylon

As another season approaches the thoughts of redecorating our homes and updating our wardrobes enter most of our heads. We all want this seasons must have colours but our budgets don’t always allow us the luxury. With upcycling so on trend now the solution lies in Dylon Fabric Dye.

Dylon is a home dye which is quick and easy to use. The range consists of machine dyes and hand wash dyes, which are avaible in a large range of beautiful colours. Dylon is suitable for use on fabrics such as cotton, linen, viscose, polyester/cotton and polyester/viscose mix.  It is perfect if you want to transform a room by simply dying your bedding, curtains or cushions. You can also add life back into those old faded jeans by using the colour Jean Blue. If you have a top, dress or skirt that you feel you have worn to death why not transform it by dying it with Powder Pink, Tulip Red or Bahama Blue.

Dylon Dye is so versatile it can even be used on canvas shoes so why not get those plain shoes and match them to your or your child’s outfit perfectly by choosing from the array of colours.

To use Dylon machine dye simply follow the following steps:

  1. Add dye (and salt if it is not the dye with added salt) then the fabric to the drum
  2. Run a 40°C cycle
  3. Run a 40°C cycle again to wash and rinse the fabric and machine.

To use the Dylon Dye for hand wash:

  1. Weigh dry fabric, wash thoroughly and leave damp
  2. Using rubber gloves to protect your hands, dissolve the dye in 500ml of warm water
  3. Fill the bowl/stainless steel sink with approximately 6 litres of warm water (40°C)
  4. Stir in 250g (10tbsp) salt. Add the dye and stir well
  5. Submerge the fabric in the water
  6. Stir for 15 minutes, then stir regularly for 45 minutes
  7. Rinse the fabric in cold water. Wash in warm water and dry away from the sunlight and direct heat.

Hints and tips:

  • Normal colour mixing rules apply when using Dylon e.g. if you use a blue dye on red fabric it will make purple.
  • If you want to use Dylon to chance one strong colour to another it is advisable to use the Dylon Pre-Dye, which will lighten the fabric.
  • For a richer, fuller colour use double the recommended amount of dye.
  • If using the original Dylon you will need to add 500g of ordinary salt, however the “Dylon Now Including Salt” will not require any extra to be added.
  • Be as bold and adventurous as you want!

Dylon is available in store on online for worldwide delivery, so go on brighten up your life.

Venosure Maternity Socks

Maternity Socks For Tired, Sore, Swollen Legs

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time for expectant mothers. However, for some mums-to-be, this can be also a time to suffer some of pregnancy's unwanted effects. Morning sickness and strange cravings may be the most well known of these, but many pregnant women also suffer from painful legs and feet, often with swelling, heaviness and an aching feeling. Varicose veins can also add to the woes and pregnancy can make all these conditions worse. 30% of new mums will get varicose veins, which rises to over 54% after the second pregnancy.

Thankfully there are products available that are designed especially for pregnancy to relieve the tired, painful legs and feet! One of these is the new graduated compression socks from Venosure Maternity . These knee high socks help support varicose veins, spider veins and help reduce pregnancy related sore and swollen legs.

What is graduated compression?

Graduated compression means the socks are designed to help support the natural function of your circulatory system by having slightly more compression at the bottom of the sock and this compression level varies as you go up passed the ankle and calf muscle. This special compression design helps to best reduce swelling in the lower leg, ankle and feet areas. Venosure Maternity socks are a Class 1 compression garment, with  compression rating of 14-18mmHg. Clinical studies have shown that wearing Class 1 compression socks helps manage venous insufficiency (circulation problems) during and after pregnancy.

The Benefits of Compression Socks in Pregnancy

  • Wearing Venosure Maternity socks can offer relief for Varicose Veins and Spider Veins.
  • Prevent swelling and soreness in feet and legs - The Class 1 graduated compression helps prevent fluid and blood from pooling in the lower leg area, aiding your body's circulatory system and reducing swelling in the feet, ankles and lower legs.
  • Reduce Aching and Discomfort - The gentle graduated compression helps relieve heavy aching feet and discomfort.

How to use Venosure Maternity Socks

Simply wear the compression socks instead of your normal socks during the day, or whenever you are out and about or on your feet for long periods of time. Venosure Maternity Socks can be worn during and after pregnancy. If you are on your feet for long periods thorughout the day, or work on your feet, you can also benefit from wearing compression socks.

You can buy Venosure Maternity Socks at Inish Pharmacy instore or online. Orders placed online can expect next day delivery in Ireland, delivery to UK in 1-2 days and delivery worldwide usually within 7 days.

Posted: Thu, 09 June 2016, 17:35

The Naïf baby skincare range has arrived into our stores and we are in love with everything to do with the brand and all it stands for.

Our babies and children are the most important things in our lives and we only want the very best for them and their delicate skin. The Naïf range delivers just that. These premium baby products are dermatologically tested and contain no parabens, perfumes or harsh chemicals.

Only the kindest ingredients are added including cottonseed oil, sweet almond oil, baisabtol oil and avocado oil.

Some of the parents here at Inish Pharmacy decided the only way to determine if the Naïf range lived up to its reputation was to put it to the test on their own children and it did not fail to impress! The Naïf Quality Baby Care Nourishing Shampoo gave 3-year-old Maisie’s long flyaway hair a super soft and shiny finish and the smell is to die for. The Quality Baby Care Cleaning wash left Logan (aged 7) skin squeaky clean and super soft and smooth. A small amount goes a long way with each of the products.

Windi single use catheters are a natural solution to relieve colic, constipation, and other gas-related problems in your infant. Made in Sweden by NoseFrida.

The Windi works instantly and does not require ingestion of any drops or medication. Using this natural method to relieve colic and wind related problems is no more difficult than using a rectal thermometer to check your child's temperature.

How To Use the Windi Rectal Catheter

  • Gently massage the child’s stomach with your hand in a downward motion towards the rectum.  Massage one side of the belly at a time. Repeat three times on each side.
  • Lift the child’s legs towards the head and carefully insert the catheter into the rectum (as if you were using a thermometer). Always use a small amount of baby oil on the tip of the catheter to ease insertion. You will hear a “whistling” sound when the gas comes out and notice immediate relief in the child. Remove The Windi and dispose of it.
  • It should only take a few seconds after inserting The Windi to achieve the desired effect. If it does not work immediately, repeat the procedure with massage and try again. Sometimes you need to repeat several times and in this case, the same catheter can be reused.

Uriage Expert Skincare

Posted: Sun, 08 November 2015, 10:28

Popular French brand Uriage has hit Inish Pharmacy with a bang. French skincare expertise has definitely not disappointed us with this fabulous range.

The Uriage products are relatively new to Irish stores and Inish Pharmacy is delighted to stock them both instore and online.

These products are ideal for sensitive dry skin, with their essential ingredient being Uriage Thermal Water. Thanks to its high concentration in mineral salts similar to the skin’s NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factors), it offers unique moisturizing benefits. Uriage Thermal Water contains a higher mineral composition than any of the competitor products on the market.

Uriage products perform to the needs of all skin types, age and sensitivity.

Here are three of our favourite products from the Uriage Range

Uriage Bariederm Levres (Lips) – This product is ideal for the winter season treating dry, chapped lips. We would recommend this product for anyone on Roaccutane treatment that finds the medication leaves them with dry, sore and cracked lips.

Eau Thermale D'Uriage (Uriage Thermal Water)Uriage Thermal Water is a skincare water for daily use, a powerful treatment formulated with trace elements and mineral salts, a source of radiance for your skin. 32% increase in skin hydration one hour after applying Uriage Thermal Water.

Uriage Keratosane 30 – A high- tolerance cream gel which is ideal for Psoriasis. The gel helps it restore the skin’s smooth, soothed and soft appearance without areas of roughness. Recommended by consultant dermatologists, Keratosane 30 softens and soothes Psoriasis plaques.

Inish Pharmacy recently welcomed Glamglow mud masks into their stores. I'd heard so much about this cult brand over the past few years with celebrities, models, and makeup artists all raving about it, so if it was good enough for them, I couldn't wait to try it. I decided to try Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment.

So when staff were were given samples of the product from our wonderful employers at Inish Pharmacy, we were delighted. Today I am reviewing Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment, which is the most popular in the range. It is for all skin types and can be used for both men and women. I have very pale, sensitive skin. A lot of products can be too harsh for me to use and can cause redness, irritation and burning. My skin type is also combination, which means I have areas of dry skin, and also oily blemish prone skin. I applied a test patch of the mud before beginning.

Glamglow comes in a sexy black tube and their hallmark Hollywood star is everywhere. The makers are proud of their Hollywood beginnings and I have to say, I am almost sold on the packaging alone.

The actual mask however, is not nearly as glamorous as the sleek packaging. It is a black/grey mud with bits of leaves throughout - not something that you would be inclined to place on your face. However, it did smell amazing.

After the shock to my senses, I applied the mud with a flat foundation brush as recommended by the product makers. It was actually a really great idea, as it allowed me to spread the mud smoothly over my face with no mess. It was also really time efficient. Within minutes I had applied a full mask, with a nice and even covering.

The mask became firm within minutes. Touching your face with the mask hardened is surreal. It is like touching rough plastering or the skin of an elephant. It is much firmer and stronger than any facemask I have used before. I also finally understood the term tinglexfoliate. Your face does physically tingle in about 6 minutes. You also become very aware of the pores that appear through the mask. It is amazing to watch and incredible how the mask works and the effects on your skin.

After 20 minutes I washed off the mask with my hands. I rubbed the skin in circular motions as described and exfoliated the skin.

Moogoo Full Cream for Baby Skin

Posted: Sat, 28 February 2015, 22:13

This guest blog post is from first time mother, Christine McBride. After her son Joseph started to get dry and angry skin that wouldn't clear with other baby creams, Christine tried Moogoo Full Cream Moisturiser, which is an all natural cream that is perfect for skin from babies to the elderly!

We regularly take our son swimming, and have done ever since he was a few months old. I noticed that he was getting dry, irritated skin all over his body. I had tried lots of baby creams but nothing seemed to be working and I was worried that I was making it worse with the different creams. After reading some great reviews, especially for babies, I tried MooGoo Full Cream Moisturiser. There is a lighter Skin Milk product but I went for the Full Cream Moisturiser, hoping that it would be more moisturising. I ordered online and the product arrived in a really cool box in the shape of a milk carton, which I liked. The cream is made from natural, edible oils so I’m not concerned if my son gets any cream near his mouth when I am not looking! It has a really nice texture, rubs in well and does not have a strong perfumed smell but still smells pleasant. I have been putting the cream all over my son’s body after he has a bath and the difference in his skin is fantastic! I enjoy massaging it into his skin and I also use it to moisturise my own hands, which keeps them from getting dry and hacked in the cold weather. I also find it handy to use as a barrier cream from dribbles and also from the cold weather under his chin area and around his mouth. Even though I use the cream regularly it lasts for a long time. You can see a real difference in my boy and I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who has dry, sensitive skin. I have also used the natural Mini Moo Bubbly Wash, also from Moogoo. I love this product and again, one bottle lasts a long time. I like how it is made from natural ingredients and helps to cleanse the whole body as well as moisturise. To top it off it creates lots of bubbles to play with, which don’t irritate my son’s skin. This was a real problem with other bubble baths, they were just too harsh on his skin. Thankfully Moogoo's Mini Moo Bubbly Bath means we can have fun bubbly bath times without the hassle of angry skin afterwards!

Blank Canvas Launches at Inish Pharmacy

Posted: Thu, 29 January 2015, 21:55

The excitement is really building here in Inish Pharmacy, for Saturday’s launch of Blank Canvas Cosmetics in our Carndonagh store. We have had the range in store since the beginning of December and the response and demand for the brushes and palettes has been phenomenal to say the least.

We are delighted to be the first Inishowen pharmacy to stock the range which was created by local woman ÚnaTynan. Blank Canvas Cosmetics was founded in 2011 and had grown from strength to strength since then. Given the high quality of their brushes, it is no surprise that they have received numerous awards for their products including the Tatler Beauty Award in 2013 and 2014.

We will have live demonstrations of the products at our launch on Saturday from 10am – 2 pm by another two local talents, Charlene Green MUA and Lisa Dillion MUA. With spot prizes and 20% discount on make-up on the day, it is certain to be an event not to be missed. Never fear though if you are unable to make the launch you can shop online at www.inishpharmacy.com. Delivery is just €3.95 or free for orders over €45.00 and for those living in Inishowen we have a Click & Collect option, allowing you to pick your order up free of charge from Pixcam, Railway Road, Buncrana and Inish Pharmacy, Muff or Carndonagh.

We look forward to seeing you all there and to give you an idea of what’s in store here are a few of our favourites from the Blank Canvas Range.

Chilblains

Posted: Wed, 07 January 2015, 21:44

The Cold Winter & Chilblains

At this time of year, the cold damp weather can result in a number of ailments and conditions that always seem to make the winter longer and harder to deal with. One of these conditions, is chilblains.

Chilblains are small red, itchy swellings that occur as your body reacts to cold temperatures, particularly if you go straight from the cold to in front of a direct heat source such as the fire or radiator. They are most common on the toes, heals and fingers but can also occur on the nose and ears. The burning sensation and itch only intensifies when you go into a warm room or into bed.

Chilblains occur, because in cold conditions, small veins and arteries in the skin get narrower to keep blood warm. In sudden warmth after cold conditions, the small surface blood vessels in the extremities can't handle the fast expansion and blood flow. The result is swelling with burning and itching sensations.

Chilblains will normally resolve themselves in a week or two, but most people will probably want something to treat them before that. If not looked after, the skin can break and the chilblain can become infected. If the skin is unbroken, a mild topical steroid cream such as Cortopin 1% or HC45, applied up to twice daily for up to seven days will help reduce the swelling and itching feeling. Other ointments such as White Tiger Balm (cooling), Lanolin Ointment or a product called Snowfire that contains natural essential oils, can be useful. These can be massaged into the area gently to help soothe the chilblain and ease the burning feeling. People who have circulation problems and smokers are more prone to chilblains. As such, it is a good idea to try keep fingers and feet warm and moving to aid circulation. Tight shoes and socks should also be avoided as they can prevent blood flow to the feet, so instead try to wear warm but loose fitting socks and shoes. Wearing warm gloves will also help.

If you have been out in the cold for a prolonged period of time, try to warm up the extremities gradually rather than immediately. A common cause is going from the cold with damp feet into the car and having the car heaters blowing hot air directly onto the feet straight away. If you are a diabetic, then you should take extra care with your feet, as you may be more prone to complications. Preventing your feet from getting too cold in the first place is the best way of preventing chilblains.

The not so secret Curl Secret.

Posted: Fri, 07 November 2014, 14:48

The Babyliss Curl Secret is my not so secret weapon. I rave about the device. It is a quick and easy, Wham Bam, instantly glam, curly hair tool. End of story.

The device is handheld, as the curls are formed so quickly, your don’t have to worry about the dead-arm-effect that usually comes from hair tongs or the burned fingers of the curling wand. The device works by drawing the hair into the ceramic, curl chamber where it is heated gently from all directions to form the perfect curl. The curl is then released, no tugging, no pulling, no fuss. The device comes with a detailed instruction leaflet and heatproof mat and a velvet drawstring bag. Perfect for travelling. Overall it is wonderfully practical, you know that Babyliss wanted to achieve the perfect product when they created the Curl Secret.

The two temperatures on the device are developed for different hair types. The lower temperature is for delicate, fine or coloured hair. Which is the one that I used, as my hair is very prone to breakages - better safe than sorry. The second temperature is higher and suited to thick or normal hair. There are three timer settings and an audio beep indicator. These settings will determine the type of curl created, loose waves, soft curls and curls, which means that you can do your hair in a variety of different curls, leaving a really natural looking, beautiful head of hair.

To make the curl, you need to:

  1. Have completely clean, brushed hair.

  2. Separate your hair into small sections, no bigger that 3cm wide; any larger and the machine will reject your strand.

  3. Keep the velvet core (on the device)  facing your head to prevent any damage or tangling of the hair.

  4. Place the strand of hair into the Curl Secret with your hair dangling out of the other side of the device. You can decide where you want the curl to start, close to the root or lower. It is entirely up to you, and therefore you have a look that is uniquely yours.

  5. Close the two handles, your strand will be sucked in, and then just wait for the beeps. Do not be alarmed by them. It is great having the thought taken out of the process and you know each curl will be identical. Practice this (on different strands) and get figure out which heat setting you like best before you begin a whole head of curls. If you do not like one, brush it out and try again in a few minutes. The best brush for this is a Tangle Teaser. (Don’t worry when the hair is sucked in- there is a safety release, the Curl Secret will not keep your hair forever).

  6. When the styler has completed a curl, you will hear the beeps,  release the handle and slowly pull the styler away. So here is the only tricky bit, figuring out how well your head holds the curl. You can pin the curl, and spritz it with hairspray if you have really fine straight hair as it might need that extra bit of help. If you have a natural wave in your hair, it should be fine as it is. Refrain from messing with any curls until they have cooled. Trust me.

Follow these six steps and you should only be twenty minutes away from a head of perfect curls. Try different settings and create different looks. It is a fantastic device and so easy to use. We love it and hope you do too. Buy here

Winter Illness

Winter Illness Tips

As winter approaches, we are into that time of year where coughs, colds and flu become a lot more prominent. While some of us may reach the springtime without succombing to some sort of winter illness, most people will catch some sort of winter cold or flu during this time. These conditions may vary from blocked or runny nose, cough and fever to vomiting and diarhhoea. They can last from a few days to over a week, but even better is if we do not get sick like this in the first place. Here are some of my favourite tips to try avoid picking up one of these infections in the first place and how to best cope if you do get sick.

Get vaccinated against Influenza.

Getting the ‘flu-jab’ each year protects against seasonal influenza, which many people refer to as flu. This is one of the more serious winter infections we come into contact with each year and is responsible for numerous hospital stays and even deaths every winter. People with existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or pregnant women are all strongly recommended to get the vaccine. Fortunately, the vaccine is available in community pharmacies and in numerous clinics at local health centres. New plans to vaccinate children in schools should help minimise spread of influenza further.

Wash your hands regularly.

This sounds like a very simple step, but it is probably the most effective thing you can do to prevent becoming infected. Most winter infections are spread by airborne droplets after an infected person coughs or sneezes, but you can introduce these germs into your body by touching your mouth, nose or eyes with your hands or fingers that have come into contact with these droplets. By washing your hands properly and regularly throughout the day, you can help reduce the chance of getting ill.

A New Way to Manage Diarrhoea in Babies and Children

Posted: Sat, 27 September 2014, 11:19

It's been a frequent scene; a tired and worried mother or father enters the pharmacy and explains they have a young child with diarrhoea. After a few questions from the pharmacist, the parent can't hide that feeling of disappointment when they are told that there is no treatment aimed at simply stopping diarrhoea in a child, and that the best form of treatment is oral rehydration therapy.

Oral rehydration therapy (O.R.T.) is central to the management of diarrhoea, with the main aim to prevent complications that can result from dehydration. This can be particularly important in babies and young children, who can become dehydrated very quickly while suffering form diarrhoea.

When using O.R.T. parents have to wait until the condition runs it's course. For many parents, this can be an anxious wait while they see their child ill. There is however, an new product that offers a different approach to the management of diarrhoea in children.

Dioclear is a new product that can offer relief of diarrhoea symptoms in children from the age of 1 year old. Dioclear contains Diosmectite, which is a natural clay-type substance that has strong adsorbent properties due to its very large surface area. It can bind bacteria and other substances which can cause diarrhoea, as well as absorbing water from the large intestine. Dioclear also protects the intestinal wall by reinforcing the intestinal mucus barrier.

This means that a child with diarrhoea can get better, sooner, and that is the most important thing. Dioclear is effective at reducing the length of time a child has diarrhoea, as well as reducing the frequency of loose stools. The end result is also a lower chance of complications from diarrhoea.

Regardless of this new treatment option, we must not overlook the importance of oral rehydration therapy. Replacing the lost fluid, salts and electrolytes using O.R.T. is key to preventing complications and aiding recovery. By combining Dioclear with O.R.T. such as Dioralyte to replace lost fluids, you can give your child the best chance of recovering from diarrhoea quickly and safely.

Dioclear is available in packs of 8 sachets. Children aged 1-6 years can use 1-2 sachets per day. Children aged 6-12 can use 2-3 sachets per day and adults can take a sachet of Dioclear three times each day.

Back to School Vitamins

Posted: Wed, 27 August 2014, 18:47

Summer, don't go! As August draws to a close, we could be forgiven for wishing for a few more weeks of long evenings and warm(ish) weather. Children up and down the country will be heading back to school this week, with many parents celebrating the start of September and many others busy preparing for what the new school year might bring.

Our first blog will concern back to school vitamins and supplements. These days there are a huge number of children's supplements available, containing a wide range of vitamins, minerals, fish oils, fibre and much more.

Firstly, not everyone will necessarily benefit from taking some sort of vitamin or supplement. With a broad, balanced diet, it's possible for your child to get all the nutrients they need. However, the majority of children (and adults) do not get the well balanced diet they could. This could be down to a number of factors, such as bad habits, taste preferences, reluctance to try new foods, budget restrictions or time constraints...it's not easy!
With children, it can be more difficult, with some kids not fond of eating fruit, vegetables or fish. These foods contain important nutrients that help support growth, energy levels and even brain function and concentration.

Getting ready during the breakfast time rush and then spending the day at school can take a while to get used to again and some children can get a bit run down and show increased signs of tiredness. Indeed, some children may be more prone to picking up an illness in the weeks after they start back at school, especially if they are a bit run down. Many parents will visit their local pharmacy and ask about a good vitamin or 'tonic' for their kids in late August/early September.
