What Is Thrush?

Vaginal thrush, or vaginal candidiasis is caused by a naturally occurring, yeast-like, fungus called candida albicans. When the natural balance in the vagina is upset it can lead to an overgrowth of candida, triggering a thrush episode.

Symptoms Of Thrush

Most women experience internal and external symptoms such as:

· Itching and burning

· Discharge which can often be thick, cottage cheese like and white

· Redness, soreness and pain: As the tissue of the genital area is very delicate, the fungal infection makes it red, swollen and very sore to touch.

· Vaginal fissuring: Cracks may appear in severe cases of inflammation.

What Are The Causes Of Thrush?

The delicate balance between bacteria and yeasts that live naturally within the vagina can be upset by any of the following factors, allowing the yeasts to overgrow, leading to fungal thrush infection.

Internal factors: Weak immune system (emotional / physical stress), hormonal imbalance due to menopause and pregnancy.

External factors: Intake of antibiotics, perfumed soap, poor diet (high sugar / yeast intake), wearing tight clothing and hot humid weather can trigger episode of thrush, poor hygiene.

What's The Best Way To Treat Thrush?

Although thrush isn't usually serious, it can be pretty uncomfortable, which is why it’s important to treat it properly.

It is recommended to treat the infection internally with an antifungal pessary as well as treating the external symptoms with an antifungal cream. Canesten Thrush Combi includes both these products in one pack.
