Product Information

The Volumatic is a large-volume spacer from GSK for use with GSK pressurised metered-dose inhalers, as prescribed. You puff the inhaler into the spacer and breathe the medicine in from it, so you don't have to time pressing the inhaler with breathing in.

This helps more of the medicine reach the lungs and less of it land in the mouth and throat. It's useful for anyone who finds an inhaler hard to use on its own, including children with adult help.

Key features

  • Large-volume spacer for GSK metered-dose inhalers
  • No need to coordinate pressing and breathing in
  • Helps more medicine reach the lungs
  • One-way valve; clicks as you breathe in
  • Easy to take apart for washing

How to use

  • Single-breath method: shake the inhaler and fit it into the end of the spacer. Seal your lips around the mouthpiece and breathe out gently. Press the inhaler once, then breathe in slowly and deeply. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out.
  • Multiple-breath method (useful for children): press the inhaler once, then take 5 to 6 normal breaths in and out through the spacer.
  • Put in one puff at a time. If a second puff is needed, wait about 30 seconds, shake the inhaler and repeat.
  • Cleaning: pull the two halves apart (don't take the valve apart). Soak in warm water with a little mild washing-up liquid. Do not rinse, rub or wipe the inside: let it drip-dry. Wipe the mouthpiece clean before use.

Safety information

Who should not use it

For use only with the inhalers it is designed for, as prescribed. A spacer is not a treatment in itself; it is used with your prescribed inhaler.

Warnings & precautions

Use only as shown by your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Replace the spacer at least every 12 months, or sooner if it is cracked or the valve no longer works. Each spacer is for one person only. Don't let children play with it. If your inhaler seems to be working less well, or you need it more often, see your doctor.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

A spacer can be used in pregnancy. Follow your doctor's advice about the inhaler medicine itself.

Possible side effects

The spacer itself does not cause side effects. Any side effects come from the inhaler medicine; read that leaflet.

Always read the label

Always read the instructions supplied with the spacer and the leaflet for your inhaler. If symptoms persist, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Active Ingredients

Large-volume plastic spacer with a one-way valve. Contains no medicine.

See the instructions in the pack for which inhalers it fits and for full care advice.
