Product Information

Canesten Cream is a 1% clotrimazole antifungal cream for fungal skin infections: athlete's foot, ringworm, fungal nappy rash and fungal sweat rash. It also relieves itching and irritation of the vulva or the end of the penis that can come with thrush. A course usually runs for two to four weeks. The 50g tube is the larger size, useful for bigger areas or a longer course.

Key features

  • Treats athlete's foot, ringworm and fungal sweat or nappy rash
  • Also relieves external itching linked to thrush
  • Clotrimazole 1% w/w in a 50g tube
  • Usually used for two to four weeks

How to use

  • Before first use, pierce the tube seal with the point on the cap.
  • For athlete's foot, wash and dry your feet carefully first, especially between the toes.
  • Apply a thin, even layer to the affected area two or three times a day and rub it in gently.
  • Keep going for at least two weeks, and up to four if needed. Itching usually eases within a few days, but redness and scaling can take longer to clear.
  • With athlete's foot, don't share towels or bath mats, change your footwear daily if you can, and wash socks in hot water.
  • If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember, then carry on as normal.
  • If there is no improvement after four weeks, see your doctor.

Safety information

Who should not use it

Do not use this cream if you (or your baby, for nappy rash) are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients, including cetostearyl alcohol or benzyl alcohol.

Warnings & precautions

Clotrimazole damages latex. If you use it on the vulva or penis, condoms and diaphragms may not work properly, so use another form of contraception for at least five days afterwards. For external use only: do not swallow it and keep it away from your eyes. If it gets into your eyes or mouth, wash with water and contact your doctor; if it is swallowed, contact a doctor or hospital straight away. See your doctor if your symptoms get worse or have not improved after four weeks. If you are using it for thrush irritation, see your doctor first if it is your first episode or you are unsure it is thrush, if you have had more than two episodes in six months, if you are under 16 or over 60, or if you have abnormal bleeding, ulcers or blisters, a foul-smelling discharge, pain passing urine, lower tummy pain or a fever.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

It can be used in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, but only under the supervision of your doctor or midwife. If you apply it near the nipple, wash the area well before feeding.

Possible side effects

Irritation, burning, pain, discomfort, itching, redness, rash, swelling, blisters, peeling or a pins-and-needles feeling where you applied it. Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you have signs of an allergic reaction: a rash, swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, feeling faint, dizzy or weak, or feeling sick.

Always read the label

This is a medicine. Always read the label and patient information leaflet before use. If symptoms persist, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Active Ingredients

Clotrimazole 1% w/w (10mg per gram). Also contains benzyl alcohol (20mg per gram) and cetostearyl alcohol, which may cause allergic reactions or local skin irritation.
