Product Information

Vermox Tablets contain mebendazole 100mg, a worming medicine that treats threadworms (also called pinworms) and other common gut worm infections, including roundworm, whipworm and hookworm. For threadworm, the usual dose is one tablet, with a second tablet two to four weeks later. The orange-flavoured tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole, and are for adults and children aged 2 and over.

Key features

  • Treats threadworm and other common gut worms
  • Mebendazole 100mg per tablet, 6 tablets
  • Chew or swallow whole; crush for young children
  • For adults and children aged 2 and over

How to use

  • Threadworm (adults and children aged 2 and over): take one tablet, then a second tablet two to four weeks later.
  • Roundworm, whipworm, hookworm or a mix of these (adults and children aged 2 and over): one tablet twice a day for three days in a row, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • For any other worm infection, use Vermox only as your doctor directs.
  • Chew the tablet or swallow it whole. For a young child, crush the tablet first and always supervise them. Vermox Oral Suspension may suit young children who can't take tablets.
  • Threadworms spread easily, so treat everyone in the household at the same time, apart from pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 2.
  • Medicine alone may not stop re-infection. For at least six weeks, keep nails short, avoid nail-biting and finger-sucking, wear pyjamas or underwear in bed, wash around the bottom every morning, use your own towel, change clothes regularly, wash and iron bed linen, and wash hands and nails after the toilet and before meals.
  • Children do not need to stay off school once they have been treated and are following the hygiene steps.

Safety information

Who should not use it

Do not take Vermox if you are allergic to mebendazole or any of the other ingredients, or if you are pregnant or think you may be. Not recommended for children under 2; a child aged 1 to 2 should only be treated under medical supervision, and only if there is no suitable alternative.

Warnings & precautions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you take, especially metronidazole (rarely, the two together can cause a serious skin reaction) or cimetidine. Vermox may make you dizzy; if it does, do not drive or use machinery. It contains sunset yellow (E110), which may cause allergic reactions. Do not take more than the stated dose.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Do not take Vermox if you are pregnant or think you may be. If you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor first; it should only be used under medical supervision.

Possible side effects

Stomach pain is common. Less often: stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, wind, feeling sick or being sick. Rarely: dizziness, liver problems, a fall in white blood cells or unusual hair loss. Very rarely, mainly at higher or longer doses: kidney inflammation or reduced bone marrow activity. Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if a baby has a fit, or if anyone has signs of a serious allergic reaction (wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, hives) or a severe rash with blistering, peeling or fever.

Always read the label
