Targeted Pain Relief for Clinical Procedures

Ametop Gel is a topical anaesthetic designed to provide deep numbing of the skin surface. Its active ingredient, tetracaine, is a powerful local anaesthetic that penetrates the skin to desensitise the area before a needle is used. Whether it is for a child's vaccination or an adult's blood test, Ametop helps to significantly reduce the "sting" and discomfort associated with these procedures.

The 1.5g tube is a single-use application, providing exactly the right amount of gel for a typical site, such as the back of the hand or the inside of the elbow.

How to use

This product should be used within one month of your order unless stored in a refrigerator.

How to Use Ametop Gel Correctly

To ensure maximum efficacy, Ametop must be applied correctly and given sufficient time to work:

  1. Prepare the Site: Identify the area where the needle will be inserted (usually where a vein is visible).
  2. Apply the Gel: Squeeze the contents of the tube onto the skin. Do not rub the gel in; it should form a thick layer.
  3. Cover with a Dressing: Cover the gel with an occlusive (airtight) dressing, such as Opsite Flexigrid or plastic kitchen wrap. This prevents the gel from being rubbed off and helps it penetrate the skin.
  4. Wait: Leave the gel in place for 45 minutes (children) or 60 minutes (adults). Do not leave it on for longer than the recommended time.
  5. Remove: Wipe away the excess gel immediately before the procedure begins. The numbing effect will last for approximately 4-6 hours.

Adults and children over 5 years of age: A maximum of 5 tubes can be applied at any one time with a maximum of 7 tubes in 24 hours.Children aged 1 month old to 5 years of age: No more than one tube should be applied at one time with a maximum of 2 tubes in 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ametop better than Emla?

Both are effective, but they contain different active ingredients. Ametop (tetracaine) often works slightly faster (45-60 mins) compared to Emla (lidocaine/prilocaine), which typically requires 60 minutes or longer. Always follow the advice of your healthcare professional.

Can I use Ametop on broken skin?

No. Ametop Gel should only be applied to healthy, unbroken skin. Do not apply it to cuts, grazes, rashes, or near the eyes, ears, or mouth.

Are there any side effects?

It is normal for the skin to turn slightly red where the gel was applied; this is due to increased blood flow to the area. However, if you notice severe itching, blistering, or a rash, remove the gel immediately and seek medical advice.
