Galfer Liquid Iron Supplement 100ml

• Adults: two 5ml spoonfuls (10ml) once a day. Take it before meals on an empty stomach if possible, or with or after food if it upsets your stomach.
• Children: only on the advice of a doctor, who will work out the dose by weight.
• Leave about 2 hours between Galfer and other medicines, and avoid taking it with tea, milk or eggs, which reduce iron absorption.
• If you do not feel better after 4 weeks, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Do not continue for more than 3 months after the deficiency is corrected without advice.

Who should not use it

Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients; if you have a condition that causes iron to build up in the body (such as haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis); if you have anaemia that is not caused by iron deficiency; if you have had repeated blood transfusions; or if you are receiving iron injections.

Warnings & precautions

Iron can be very harmful in overdose, especially to children - keep it well out of their sight and reach, as an overdose can be fatal. Talk to your pharmacist if you take antibiotics (such as tetracyclines), medicines for Parkinson's disease, bisphosphonates for osteoporosis, penicillamine, methyldopa, or zinc or calcium supplements. Galfer may turn your stools darker than usual, which is normal and harmless. It contains maltitol, parabens, propylene glycol, benzyl alcohol and a small amount of alcohol.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Can be used after the first 13 weeks of pregnancy and while breastfeeding - talk to your doctor first, especially in early pregnancy, as you may also need folic acid.

Possible side effects

The most common are stomach upset - nausea, constipation or diarrhoea - and darkening of the stools. Stop use and seek advice if you have an allergic reaction.

Each 5ml contains ferrous fumarate 140mg, equivalent to 45mg of elemental iron. Contains maltitol, parabens (E215/E217/E219), propylene glycol, benzyl alcohol and ethanol.
