This medicine is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over. It is not recommended for children under 12 years unless advised by a doctor.

How to use
  • Shake the bottle well before use.
  • Adults and children 12 years and over: take 10-20 ml after meals and before bedtime, up to four times a day. Not recommended for children under 12.
  • Do not take within 2 hours of other medicines taken by mouth, as Gaviscon can affect how they are absorbed.
  • Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better, or feel worse, after 7 days.
  • Do not refrigerate or freeze. Use within 6 months of opening.

Who should not use it

Do not take if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Not suitable for children under 12 years.

Warnings & precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have kidney or heart disease, severe kidney problems, a low blood phosphate level (hypophosphataemia), reduced stomach acid, kidney stones or a high blood calcium level. Each dose contains sodium and calcium, so take care if you are on a low-salt diet or need it every day for a long time. Contains methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoates (parabens), which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). Like all antacids it can mask the symptoms of more serious conditions - see your doctor if symptoms last longer than 7 days. Keep a 2-hour gap between Gaviscon and other medicines taken by mouth (for example antihistamines, some antibiotics, iron, thyroid medicines, ketoconazole, digoxin, beta-blockers and bisphosphonates).

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As with all medicines, keep the treatment period as short as possible. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Possible side effects

Side effects are uncommon. Very rarely an allergic reaction can occur - an itchy rash, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat with difficulty breathing or wheezing; stop taking it and get medical help straight away. Other effects may include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or itching. Taking more than recommended may cause bloating or mild abdominal discomfort.

Active Ingredients

Each 10 ml dose contains sodium alginate 500 mg, sodium hydrogen carbonate 213 mg and calcium carbonate 325 mg. Also contains methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoates (parabens), which may cause allergic reactions, propylene glycol (E1520), and sodium (128 mg per 10 ml dose).
