Canesten Clotrimazole 500mg Pessary

• Use it at bedtime, so it stays in place overnight.
• Load the pessary into the applicator. Lying on your back with your knees bent, insert the applicator as deeply as is comfortable into the vagina, then press the plunger slowly until it stops.
• Remove the applicator and dispose of it. Wash your hands.
• Some white residue the next day is normal - a panty liner helps.
• One pessary is the full course. Your symptoms should settle within about three days.
• If you are no better after 7 days, see your doctor.

Who should not use it

Do not use this pessary if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the ingredients, during your period, or during the first three months of pregnancy.

Warnings & precautions

Clotrimazole damages latex - it can reduce the effectiveness of condoms and diaphragms, so use another form of contraception for at least five days after treatment. Avoid sex while you are being treated, and do not use tampons, spermicides or other vaginal products at the same time. See your doctor rather than treating this yourself if this is your first episode of thrush, if you are unsure it is thrush, if you have had more than two episodes in the last six months, if you are under 16 or over 60, if you have had a sexually transmitted infection or been exposed to one, or if you have any abnormal bleeding, blood-stained discharge, ulcers, blisters or sores, a foul-smelling discharge, pain passing urine, lower tummy pain or a fever. Do not use it during your period.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Do not use it in the first three months of pregnancy. Later in pregnancy, and while breastfeeding, use it only on the advice of your doctor or midwife - and tell them you are pregnant, as the applicator may not be suitable.

Possible side effects

Mild burning or irritation just after use is the commonest, and usually settles. Vaginal discomfort, redness, swelling, itching, peeling skin, light bleeding or lower tummy pain can occur. Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you develop a rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or feel faint.
