Product Information

Emazole Control contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that reduces how much acid your stomach makes. It is for the short-term relief of reflux symptoms in adults - heartburn and acid regurgitation, the burning feeling that rises into the chest or leaves a sour taste in the mouth. It is not a fast-acting antacid: it takes two to three days of daily tablets before you feel the benefit, and it then keeps acid down for at least 24 hours at a time.

Key features

  • Short-term relief of heartburn and acid reflux
  • Esomeprazole 20mg gastro-resistant tablets, one a day
  • Builds over 2-3 days, then lasts 24 hours per dose
  • Available in 7 and 14 tablet packs

How to use

  • Adults: take one 20mg tablet a day, at any time of day, with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water - do not chew or crush it. If you find it hard to swallow, drop it into a glass of still water, stir until it breaks up and drink within 15 minutes.
  • You may need to take it for 2 to 3 days in a row before your symptoms improve. Do not take more than one tablet a day.
  • Stop taking it once your reflux symptoms have gone completely.
  • Do not treat yourself for more than 14 days in a row. Talk to a doctor if you do not feel better, or feel worse, after 14 days.

Safety information

Who should not use it

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to esomeprazole, to other medicines ending in -prazole, or to any of the ingredients, or if you are taking nelfinavir (an HIV medicine). Not recommended for anyone under 18 years of age.

Warnings & precautions

Talk to your doctor before taking it if you have trouble or pain swallowing, ongoing stomach pain or indigestion, unintentional weight loss, are vomiting food or blood, or are passing black stools - these need checking first, and this medicine can mask them. Get medical help straight away if you have chest pain along with light-headedness, sweating or dizziness. Tell your pharmacist what else you take: it can interact with warfarin, clopidogrel, methotrexate, phenytoin, atazanavir and ketoconazole among others. Stop and seek help if you develop a rash on sun-exposed skin, or wheezing, swelling of the throat or a severe rash. If you need it for longer than a year your doctor will want to monitor you.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, only take this medicine if your doctor has said you should. Do not take it if you are breastfeeding - it is not known whether esomeprazole passes into breast milk.

Possible side effects

Common: headache, diarrhoea or constipation, wind, nausea or stomach pain. Uncommon: dizziness or a rash. Rarely, low blood sodium, a change in taste, or hair loss; long-term use has been linked to low magnesium, reduced vitamin B12 and a higher risk of fractures. Stop taking it and get medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Always read the label

This is a medicine. Always read the label and patient information leaflet before use. If symptoms persist, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
