• Apply one patch each morning to clean, dry, hair-free, unbroken skin on the hip, upper arm or chest, and press firmly for 10-20 seconds.
• Wear it for 16 hours, then remove it at bedtime. Use only one patch at a time.
• Choose a different site each day, and avoid using the same area two days in a row.
• Wash your hands after applying. Fold used patches in half and dispose of them out of reach of children and pets.
• Step-down programme: use the 25mg patch for about 8 weeks, then step down to 15mg for 2 weeks, then 10mg for 2 weeks, then stop. If you still need it after 6 months, ask your pharmacist or doctor.

Who should not use it

Do not use if you are allergic to nicotine or any of the ingredients, or if you are a non-smoker. Not for children under 18 years except on medical advice.

Warnings & precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have recently had a heart attack or stroke, or have unstable or worsening angina, an irregular heartbeat or uncontrolled high blood pressure; or if you have diabetes (monitor your blood sugar more closely), an overactive thyroid, a phaeochromocytoma, stomach or duodenal ulcers, liver or kidney problems, or a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis over a large area. Remove the patch before an MRI scan, and do not smoke while using it. If you take theophylline, clozapine or ropinirole, your dose may need adjusting when you stop smoking.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ideally try to stop smoking without NRT. If you can't, NRT may be used because the risk to your baby is far less than continued smoking - but talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Possible side effects

A mild skin reaction (redness or itching) where the patch was applied is common and usually settles. Other effects can include headache, dizziness, nausea and vivid dreams or disturbed sleep (removing the patch at bedtime helps). Remove the patch and seek advice if you get a severe or lasting skin reaction.
