• Who it's for: the 2mg gum suits smokers with a low to moderate nicotine dependency. If you smoke heavily, have tried 2mg without success, or still have strong cravings, ask your pharmacist whether the 4mg strength is more suitable.
• Chew and park: chew one piece slowly until the taste becomes strong, then rest it between your gum and cheek. Chew again when the taste fades. Repeat for about 30 minutes, then throw the gum away. Do not swallow it.
• Use one piece whenever you feel the urge to smoke; most people need 8 to 12 pieces a day. Do not use more than one piece an hour, and never exceed the maximum daily number of pieces stated on the pack.
• Avoid coffee, acidic drinks and soft drinks for 15 minutes before chewing, as they can reduce how well the nicotine is absorbed.
• Use for at least 3 months, then gradually reduce the number of pieces. Stop when you are down to 1 to 2 pieces a day. Use beyond 6 months is generally not recommended; if you still need it after 9 months, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

Who should not use it

Do not use if you are allergic to nicotine or any of the ingredients, or if you don't smoke. Not for use by anyone under 18 unless a doctor recommends it. Even small amounts of nicotine are dangerous to children: keep the gum, including used pieces, out of their sight and reach.

Warnings & precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have heart or circulation problems (including a recent heart attack or stroke, angina, irregular heartbeat or uncontrolled high blood pressure), diabetes, an overactive thyroid, phaeochromocytoma, kidney or liver problems, stomach ulcers or an inflamed oesophagus, or a history of seizures. People with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar closely, as stopping smoking can change it. Stopping smoking can also affect some medicines, including theophylline, clozapine, olanzapine and insulin. The gum can stick to and, very rarely, damage dentures or dental work; if you have dentures or jaw problems, ask about another form of nicotine replacement.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, try to stop smoking without nicotine replacement first. Only use this gum on the advice of your doctor, midwife or pharmacist. Nicotine passes into breast milk, so if you are breastfeeding, only use it on professional advice; if advised to use it, chew it just after a feed rather than in the two hours before.

Possible side effects

Nausea is very common. Other common effects include mouth, tongue or throat irritation, hiccups, indigestion, heartburn, wind, increased saliva, dizziness, headache and jaw ache (chewing more slowly helps). Uncommon effects include palpitations and hives. Stop and get medical help straight away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction or an irregular heartbeat.

Also contains sorbitol (E420), which may not be suitable if you have a hereditary fructose intolerance, and butylhydroxytoluene (E321), which may cause local irritation of the mouth. Sweetened with sucralose, acesulfame potassium, xylitol and mannitol.
