Product Information

Nurofen for Children Strawberry is an ibuprofen liquid for babies and children from 3 months of age who weigh at least 5kg. It brings down a fever and eases pain - teething, earache, sore throat, headache, toothache, and the aches of a cold or flu. Because it is an anti-inflammatory it also helps with the swelling of a sprain or strain. Each 5ml contains 100mg of ibuprofen, and a dosing syringe is included.

Key features

  • Eases pain and brings down a fever for up to 8 hours
  • Ibuprofen 100mg per 5ml, with a dosing syringe
  • Anti-inflammatory, so it also helps sprains and strains
  • From 3 months and 5kg - strawberry flavour

How to use

  • Shake the bottle well and measure the dose with the syringe supplied - never a kitchen spoon. Give it with or just after food if your child has a sensitive stomach.
  • 3 to 6 months (5 to 7.6kg): 2.5ml, up to three times in 24 hours.
  • 6 to 12 months (7.7 to 9kg): 2.5ml, up to three times in 24 hours.
  • 1 to 3 years (10 to 16kg): 5ml, up to three times in 24 hours.
  • 4 to 6 years (17 to 20kg): 7.5ml, up to three times in 24 hours.
  • 7 to 9 years (21 to 30kg): 10ml, up to three times in 24 hours.
  • 10 to 12 years (31 to 40kg): 15ml, up to three times in 24 hours.
  • Leave at least 6 hours between doses and never give more than three doses in 24 hours.
  • Not for babies under 3 months or under 5kg.

Safety information

Who should not use it

Do not give this medicine to a child who is allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAID), or who has ever had wheezing, asthma, a runny nose, a rash or swelling after taking one; who has or has had a stomach ulcer, a perforation or bleeding in the stomach or gut; who has severe kidney, heart or liver problems; or who is already taking another ibuprofen product, aspirin or another anti-inflammatory. Not for babies under 3 months or weighing less than 5kg. Also do not give it if your child has hereditary fructose intolerance.

Warnings & precautions

Avoid ibuprofen while your child has chickenpox - it has been linked to rare but serious skin and soft-tissue complications, so use a paracetamol product instead and speak to your pharmacist. Take care if your child has asthma or allergies, as ibuprofen can bring on wheezing. If your child is dehydrated - not drinking, vomiting or has diarrhoea - there is a risk to the kidneys, so get them drinking or speak to your doctor before giving it. Give it with or just after food if your child has a sensitive stomach. Ibuprofen can mask the signs of an infection, so watch for symptoms that are not settling. Never give it alongside another ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory medicine. For babies aged 3 to 5 months, talk to your doctor if your baby gets worse at any point, or if symptoms carry on for more than 24 hours. For older children, talk to your doctor if your child is no better, or is getting worse, after 3 days.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

This is a medicine for children. If you are pregnant and looking for a painkiller for yourself, ibuprofen should not be used in the last three months of pregnancy - ask your pharmacist which product to use.

Possible side effects

The commonest are stomach complaints - heartburn, indigestion, feeling sick, being sick, tummy pain, diarrhoea or constipation. Stop giving it and get medical help straight away if your child vomits blood or passes black or bloodstained stools, develops a rash, blistering or peeling skin, starts wheezing or becomes short of breath, gets a stiff neck with a headache and fever, or bruises or bleeds unexpectedly.

Always read the label

This is a medicine. Always read the label and patient information leaflet before use. If symptoms persist, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
