Bio-Kult — Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bio-Kult should I choose?

Every Bio-Kult product is built on live bacteria strains, but each one is pointed at a different job. This is the range we stock:

  • Bio-Kult Everyday is the original multi-strain formula, containing 14 strains of live bacteria for everyday use. Available as a 30-pack, a 60-pack and a 120-pack.
  • Bio-Kult Boosted is an advanced multi-action formulation designed to target both the immune system and the digestive tract, with four times the concentration of bacteria of Bio-Kult Everyday plus vitamin B12, which contributes to immune function.
  • Bio-Kult Migrea contains 14 strains of live bacteria as well as magnesium and vitamin B, which help support the normal functioning of the nervous system.
  • Bio-Kult Candéa contains seven strains of probiotic bacteria along with added garlic and grapefruit seed extract.
  • Bio-Kult Infantis is a multi-strain sachet formula for babies, toddlers and young children, with 7 strains of live bacteria and 950mg of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) per sachet, suitable from 6 months of age.
  • Bio-Kult Pro-Cyan — a triple-action formula with two strains, cranberry extract and vitamin A, aimed at the urinary tract. Currently out of stock with us; ask and we will let you know when it lands.

What is the difference between Bio-Kult Everyday and Bio-Kult Boosted?

Strength, mainly. Everyday is the original 14-strain daily formula. Bio-Kult Boosted contains 8 billion live bacterial microorganisms per capsule, four times the strength of Bio-Kult Everyday, and adds 2.5mcg of vitamin B12. People tend to use Everyday as a steady daily habit and reach for Boosted around antibiotics, travel or a stretch when they want a bit more behind them.

Do I need to keep Bio-Kult in the fridge?

No. Bio-Kult can be stored at room temperature without the need for refrigeration, and the total viable count is guaranteed to the end of the two-year shelf life. That is what makes it a practical one to throw into a suitcase or a school bag.

Can I take Bio-Kult with antibiotics?

Bio-Kult Boosted is suitable for use with antibiotics, and Bio-Kult Infantis can be taken every day, alongside antibiotics and as part of a healthy lifestyle. As a matter of routine we would still suggest spacing the capsule a couple of hours away from the antibiotic dose, and finishing the full antibiotic course exactly as your GP prescribed it.

How many capsules a day should I take?

Follow the directions on the pack you have bought, as it differs across the range — Everyday, Boosted, Migrea and the Infantis sachets are not all dosed the same way. If you have never taken a live bacteria supplement before, some people prefer to start with one a day for the first week before moving to the full amount. Do not exceed the stated dose.

What if I cannot swallow capsules?

The Bio-Kult Boosted capsule can be opened and sprinkled onto cool food or a cool drink if preferred. Keep whatever you mix it into cool rather than hot. For babies and young children, Infantis comes as a powder sachet, which avoids the issue entirely.

Is Bio-Kult suitable for babies and children?

Bio-Kult Infantis is suitable from 6 months of age and contains 1 billion live bacteria per sachet, is gluten free, suitable for vegetarians, and contains no artificial colours or flavours. Bio-Kult Everyday is suitable for children as well as adults. We would always suggest a word with your GP, public health nurse or our pharmacist before starting a supplement in a young child.

Can I take Bio-Kult while pregnant?

Bio-Kult Everyday is stated by the manufacturer as suitable for pregnant women, and Bio-Kult Pro-Cyan is likewise suitable to be taken when pregnant. Bio-Kult's own guidance, and ours, is to consult your doctor or healthcare practitioner before taking any food supplement in pregnancy. Bring the pack to your next appointment and it takes thirty seconds to check.

Are there allergens in Bio-Kult? Is it gluten free?

Bio-Kult Everyday is gluten free and contains traces of soya and traces of milk at a level which will not affect lactose intolerance sufferers. Infantis is gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. Candéa contains garlic and grapefruit seed extract, so it is one to check if grapefruit interacts with any medicine you take. Full ingredient lists are on each product page.

How long before I notice anything?

There is no fixed answer, and we would be wary of anyone who gives you one. Live bacteria supplements are taken as an ongoing habit rather than a course, so give it a consistent four to six weeks at the stated dose before you decide whether it suits you. If you are taking it for a specific reason — around a course of antibiotics, or a fortnight abroad — start it a few days beforehand rather than on the day.

Do you deliver Bio-Kult across Ireland?

We do. Inish Pharmacy is a registered Irish pharmacy operating from our pharmacies in Co. Donegal, and because Bio-Kult needs no refrigeration it posts perfectly well. We ship nationwide across the Republic of Ireland and to Northern Ireland, prices are in euro, and Click & Collect is available if you would rather call in. If a product is showing out of stock, message us and we will tell you when it is expected.

Inish Pharmacy Expert Tip

"Take your Bio-Kult with or just after a meal rather than on an empty stomach — it is easier on the tummy and, honestly, far easier to remember. And if you have a holiday coming up, start the Boosted three or four days before you fly rather than the morning you land. That is what we do ourselves, and it is the single tip customers come back and thank us for."
